Who We Are and What We Do
The Tasmanian Audit Office is an independent agency charged with upholding public integrity in Tasmania.
The office, headed by the Auditor-General, has a broad mandate under the Financial Management and Audit Act 1990 to promote improved public sector performance and accountability in Tasmania.
Responsible to the Tasmanian Parliament, the Audit Office plays an essential role in the maintenance of sound governance. Under the Westminster system of government, it is Parliament that holds the government of the day accountable for meeting its responsibilities. The Auditor-General has a duty to audit all public sector entities, and to report all findings to the Parliament.
The work of the Audit Office embraces three major components, Financial Audit, Compliance Audit and Performance Audit, covering all aspects of public sector activity, including local government.
The Audit Office also audits the Budget Outcomes Statements, the Public Account Statement and the Consolidated Financial Statements for the State of Tasmania. Drawing together every aspect of the State's assets and liabilities, these reports provide an accurate picture of Tasmania's net worth.
Our mandate to conduct performance and compliance audits has seen the Office review compliance and service delivery aspects in a range of public sector entities with up to eight reports tabled per annum. These reports are included in the publications section of this website.
